5.2 Before,After and While 

1. The pictures show seven periods in Geoffrey's life. Look at the arrows above the pictures. What events does each point to?
*The first arrow points to the events that he left or finished school and went to college.
*The second arrow points to the events that he left or graduated from college and joined the army or became an army captain.
*The third arrow points to the event that he was promoted to general.
*The fourth arrow points to the events that he left or retired from the army and went into or got involved in politics.
*The fifth arrow points to the event that he was arrested or-was sent to prison. 
*The sixth arrow points to the events that he came out of prison or was released and retired or went to the Bahamas.

2. The arrows below the pictures show other events in his life. In groups, ask and answer questions about when each happened.

5.6 Past Events : The Passive


1. We might find it under the painting. It tells us that Sunflowers was painted by Van Gogh.

2. We might find it in an antique shop. It tells us that these earrings were worn by the Romans at the approximate time of 100 A.D.
3. We might find it on the cover of a book. It tells us that the existing version of Anna Karenina was translated into English by Rosemary Edmonds.

We might find it outside a printing press. It tells us that the printing press was invented by Caxton in 1476.

5.
We might find it outside a wine bottle. It tells us that Nuits St Georges, a fine red wine, was bottled in 1975.

6. We might find it on a grave. It tells us that it is dedicated to the unknown soldiers who were killed during the First World War.

7.
We might find it on a tomato can. It tells us that it was produced in Italy.

8.
We might find it outside a house. It tells us that William Shakespeare was born in this house in 1564, and he died in 1616.

9. We might find it outside a college. It tells us that Williamson College was founded by Lord Williamson.

10. We might find it in the list of reference books or bibliography. It tells us that the book Feelings was written by Doff and Jones and that it was published by Cambridge University Press in 1980.
