4.1 Prepositions of Direction

What possible directions can you go in if you are

1. in a street? – up, down, along, across
2. by a low wall? – (step) over, onto, along
3. by a bed? – (get) onto, off, into, out of, go round, under
4. a fly on a wall? – up, down, across, fly off the wall
5. near a house? – towards, away from, up to, past, round, into
6. in a field? – across, through, round
7. standing near a tunnel? – into, out of, through, away from
8. near two trees? – between, round, up to, climb up, down,

Write appropriate prepositions in the gaps.

1. When the bull began to run towards me, I jumped over the fence into the next field.
2. He took two books out of the shelf. He put one of them on /onto the table and the other one in /into the briefcase.
3. She ran along the corridor and down the stairs into the basement.
4. His bullet whistled past my ear, so I shot him right between the eyes.
5. He came up to her and put his arm round the waist.
6. The prisoner jumped through the window, ran across the street and jumped into a car that was waiting for him on the other side.
7. Looking through the microscope, she saw the two cells separate and move slowly away from each other.
8. They couldn’t get over the high wall, so they dug a tunnel under it.


4.3 How Do You Do It?

1. You’ve got a rope and a rock. How do you anchor your boat?
= First you tie one end of the rope onto the boat. Then you come out of the boat with the other end. After that you come to the side and pull the boat and then you tie the end around the rock. 

2. You’ve got a matchbox, two needles, a candle, and a knife. How do you make a model car?
= You put the needles through the match box, one at each end, so that they can stick out of the sides. Then you cut the candle into four pieces with the knife, and you stick the pieces of candle onto the ends of the needles.

3. You’ve got a rope, a sheet and six pencils. How do you make a tent?
You find two trees, not too far from each other. You tie the rope from one tree to the other. Then you hang the sheet over the rope, and you stick the pencils through the edges of the sheet into the ground (three each side).

4. You’ve got a bottle of beer and some jam. How do you make a trap for wasps?
=  First you open the bottle. Then you pour the jam into it. After that you shake the bottle well, and then put it on the place which wasps possibly visit.

5. You’re walking along a road and you come to a crossroads. There’s a four -way signpost, but it has come out of its hole and is lying at the side of the road. The name of the place you want to go to is written on one of the arms of the signpost. How do you find which road to take?
5. You know where you’ve come from. So, you put up the signpost with that arm pointing along the road you’ve just come down.

4.6 Finding Your Way

1. The castle
A: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the castle?
B: Go out of the bus station and turn right. Go straight along the road as far as the museum on the left. Then take the first turning on the left and you'll see the castle in front of you.

2. The library
A: Excuse me, how do I get to the library?
B: Go out of the bus station and turn right. Take the first turning on the left. Go as far as the station and take the first turning on the left. Go Straight on until you find the first turning on the right. Keep straight on along this road. Then you'll see the library on your right.

3. The boat club
A: Excuse me, how do I get to the boat club?
B: You go out of the bus station and turn right. Take the second turning on the left and go on to the end of the road. After this, turn right and keep straight on past the Odeon Cinema and then take the first turning on the left until you get to the end of this road. Afterwards turn right and you'll see the boat club on your left.

4. The bank
A: Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the bank please?
B: Yes, certainly. First go out of the bus station and turn right. Then go along the road as far as the Market on the left and turn left. After this take the second turning on the left. You'll see the bank on your right.

5. The comprehensive school
A: Excuse me, how do I get to the comprehensive school? B: First, get out of the bus station and turn left. Go straight on crossing the railway line until you get the second turning on the right. Keep straight on past the police station until you get to the end of the road. Then turn left and you'll see the comprehensive school on you left.

6. The swimming pool
A: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the swimming pool?
B: Yes, certainly, First go out of the bus station and turn right. Then keep straight on until you find the third turning on the left. Keep on going until you get to the end of the road and turn right, keep straight on past the boat club on the left and then take the first turning on the left. Again, turn to the left and go on. You'll see the swimming pool on your right.

4.7 Your Own Area

1. The nearest Post Office
A: Excuse me, how do I get to the post office?
B: First go out on the road and turn right. Keep until you get the first turning on the left. Turn right and you'll see the first lane on the right. Go along the lane and you'll find the post office on your left.

2. The nearest station
A: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the bus station?
B: First go out of the building and turn left. Go straight as far as the end of this road. Then turn right and keep on going. You'll see the bus station on your right.

3. The nearest supermarket
A: Excuse me, how do I get to the supermarket?
B: First go out of this lane onto the main road and turn right. Keep straight on until you find the third turning on the right. Then go straight along this road until you find a statue at the crossroads and turn right. You'll find the supermarket on your right.

4. Your house
A: Excuse me, how do I get to your house?
B: First go out of the campus to the main road and turn right. Then keep on going. You'll cross the bridge and go towards the airport. Go past ‘R’ bus stop and get to the airport bus stop. You'll find a narrow lane to left. Keep on going and you'll find my yellow house with compound walls on your left.

5. Anywhere else you like(From Super Market to Theatre)

A: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the theatre?
B: First go out of the Supermarket and turn right. Go straight on until you find the first turning on the right. Take turning along this road. You'll see the theatre on your left.
