16.1 In ,On & At

In We use in to show that something is completely inside something and to show that something is in an area with boundaries e.g. chairs in the dining room and cows in the field. 
On We use on to show that something is on a line or on a surface, e.g. a table on the bottle and a town on the lake.
At We use at to show that something is at or near a point, e.g. at a bus stop.

Practice
1. In a river we might find water, people swimming, islands, fish, etc. On water we might find boats, ice, towns, tree. etc.
2. In a bottle we might find water, wine, a cork, etc. On a bottle we might a label, dust, etc.
3. In a bed we might find someone asleep, insects, etc. On a bed we might find blankets, someone having a rest, etc.
4. On a door we might find a knocker, a message, a number, etc. At a door we might find a visitor, a beggar, etc.
5. In the grass we might find insects, a snake, etc. (long grass). On the grass we might find people sitting, etc. (short grass).
6. In a swimming pool we might find people swimming, etc. At a swimming pool we might find people changing, watching, drinking tea, etc.
7. In a corner (indoors) we might find a lamp, a wastepaper basket, etc. At a corner (of a street) we might find someone waiting, a letter box, etc.

Now fill the gaps with in, on or at. 

1. Have you got an electric blanket on your bed? I've only got a hot-water bottle in mine.
2. There's a ticket machine at the entrance to the car park.
3. Finchley Road tube station is on the Bakerloo Line.
4. In summer, there are always flies on the kitchen ceiling.
5. She spent the day sunbathing at the swimming pool.

7. There's a newspaper shop on my way to the office.

9. There is snow on Kilimanjaro throughout the year.
10. Tickets must be shown at the barrier.

16.2 Whole and Parts


 1. The study room is at the front of the house.
2. The attic is at the top of the house.
3. The garage is at the end of the house.
4. The bathroom is at the side of the house.
5. 5 The tap is at the corner of the house.
6. The gardens are at the front and back of the house.
7. The chimney is at the front of at the top of the house.
8. The hall is at the front of the house.
9. The sitting room is in the middle of the house.
Now talk about them in relation to other parts of the house.
Example: The study is above the sitting room.
1. The study is between the two bedrooms. The attic is above the study.
2. The attic is under the roof.
3. The garage is nut to the hall.
4. The bathroom is above the kitchen.
5. The tap is below the kitchen.
6. The gardens are in front of the sitting room and behind the kitchen.
7. The chimney is on the roof. The chimney is above the bathroom.
8. The hall is between the sitting room and the garage. 9. The sitting room is between the dining room and the hall. The sitting room is below the study.
